Each photograph is a double exposure, made by either Peter Fischli or David Weiss taking pictures and then handing the camera over to the other, or perhaps not, rewinding the film, and shooting again on the same roll of film. The result is a kaleidoscopic world of double-vision
“We were interested in the element of chance,” says Peter Fischli, adding “On the theoretical side, the photographs tread on rather thin ice.” David Weiss affirms: “In fact, they tread quite a thin line: we want to seduce viewers with floral opulence. But you can’t exactly view them ingenuously, either.”

YAYOI KUSAMA, Narcissus Garden, 1966 – 1999 [mirror ball, 2001]

YAYOI KUSAMA, Narcissus Garden, 1966 – 1999
ca 28 x 18 x 20 cm
plastic mirror ball, transparent plastic mini bag, ribbon, printed tag
edition 1500
mint condition; pristine ball in clear transparent plastic bag
very rare in this condition
published by Les Abattoirs, Lyon, France
Collection K. van Gelder, Amsterdam
inv.YKus 000-pr

This mirror ball in transparant plastic bag was shown in “Een goed in de weg staande tafel” curated by Jack Jaeger in Galerie van Gelder in 2001. A catalogue was issued.
In spite of its description being an edition of 1500 this multiple as shown above is difficult to find. It is known that the original version of plastic balls shown in the Venice Biennale in 1966 was produced in an edition of 1500, but one may wonder what has happened with the other 1499 copies. This apparently smaller plastic version is put in a plastic mini bag with tag saying: YAYOI KUSAMA One of the 1500 mirror balls of Narcissus Garden 1966-1999.

At least one version of the yellow tag circulates, printed with another date i.e. ‘1966 – 2001’. Also the ribbon has been replaced by a chain. So the tag of the above ball was produced in 1999, the one pictured below in 2001. KvG

Example of a tag with chain instead of ribbon, with slightly aged plastic bag. This tag is of a later date, namely 1966-2001.

In 1998 Thora Johansen, director of the Bifrons Foundation in Amsterdam, invited Henk Peeters to make a film for her Flash project that found its premiere with nine DVD’s in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1999. Peeters very soon came up with an idea of having a rain of white feathers coming down on a glass plate until this was completely covered with a layer of down. It was filmed in colour with a blue background, added with music of invited composer and guitarist Eric Calmes. For the second request to make also a very short film of one minute Henk Peeters decided to have the film in negative run backwards within the given sixty seconds.

FRANCK BRAGIGAND, Restoration of the daily life “The Red Nature Morte”, 1999

FB2001-certificate700

FRANCK BRAGIGAND, Restoration [sic] of the daily life “The Red Nature Morte”, Amsterdam, 1999
29,7 x 21 cm
digital print, certificate
installation with table, four theatre chairs, painted carpet, painting and waste-paper basket, 8 parts

This certificate of authenticity has been signed more than several times and is eventually signed and dated in the lower left corner. This domestic installation was a proposal of Franck Bragigand after he got an open commission for a modest amount of money that was half of the heritage the owner of the basement got after her father died in 1999. The red painting on the wall and a red waste-paper basket were ‘added as a present’ to the installment of the owner’s renovated furniture.
Private collection Thora Johansen.

For the show ‘Een Goed in de Weg staande Tafel’ (2001) in Galerie van Gelder curator and artist Jack Jaeger placed a wooden zigzagging table of 11 meters long like on a market in the open air. This table filled the gallery space completely. The exhibition ‘A table standing perfectly in the way’ combined objects, photos, printed matter, CD’s and video’s, based on a concept of Jack Jaeger. Tom Friedman was among others invited to participate on this table and he proposed to have a large handmade wooden book display of more than one meter wide put on it for his Dollar Bill print he made in 1999. Instead of hanging the print in a frame on a wall. It is a print of a collage of thirty six one dollar bank notes, cut into tiny square centimeters, and again brought back to one big and visually trembling bank note on which George Washington is showing many noses.
