Hreinn Fridfinnsson showed works in Galerie Balderich together with close friends/colleagues Sigurdur Gudmundsson, Kristjan Gudmundsson, Douwe Jan Bakker, Pieter Holstein and Thordur Ben Sveinsson. This poster is proof of the first group exhibition he had, after he had a solo show in Galerie Fignal in Haarlem, a gallery he founded himself in his home. Later on he moved to Amsterdam, including his home gallery meant for his closest friends to show some art works mainly in a corridor of his living room. KvG

This is the first newsletter of Galerie van Gelder issued in the beginning of June 1992. It announces the gallery’s participation of Art Basel ’92, being a co-operation of five galleries. This was initiated by John M Armleder who also coined the name “Associated Publishers”. For that he designed a logo “AP” that was supposed to promote a co-operation of publishers in Geneva, Cologne, Amsterdam and New York. An edition “AP” was made by galerie van Gelder Editions on an enamel door plate. The image depicts the letters AP inside a tumbled zero.

In “Six Logo’s around the carpet” a hand woven carpet with tassels by Peter Nagy played a central role. The title of this black and white fabric is ‘Desease and Decoration’. It depicts six microscopic enlarged Aids-virus pictures used as a decoration for a carpet that was produced and distributed by Equator Productions in Brussels in Belgium. Six art works were shown on six walls.

These pictures were taken by Thora Johansen during a stay with friends in a villa in Canneto Pavese at Christmas holidays time in 1974. At New Year’s Eve Hreinn asked Thora to make a photo of a jump just before midnight, one on the stroke of twelve ‘o clock and one after the stroke.
On behalf of his solo exhibition at (((R))) Rozenstraat in Amsterdam in 2020 with the help of the Mondriaan Fonds an edition was made from the original vintage prints from 1975 shown above.
In 2018 the original A6 photos were put on the website of Galerie van Gelder for the first time ever, with click-on HRes files. All these years they were glued-in in a family photo book of Thora K. Johansen who took the pictures, and as such only privately accessible between 1975 and 2018. In 2019 the digital images were taken from the website for making an edition, without the knowledge of the photographer.
For the production of the edition the reddish tone in the vintage photos was replaced by a more blueish one. The images have been cropped, mainly at the bottom part of the photos, apparently to bring the proportions back to the double A4 standard size or perhaps for esthetic reasons.

The invites in this binder have been collected during a period of 28 years and as such a rarety. It includes a hand written hand-out invite for an exhibition at In-Out Center in Amsterdam in 1972. The card could be considered a self made multiple in tiny envelope, both hand written in pencil. It is unknown if there are any left apart from this one.

The House Project (1974-2007) is originally a sculpture installed in the open air by Hreinn Fridfinnsson. Once he read about an aristocratic character in an Icelandic novel who decided to build his house inside-out, with wallpaper, curtains and framed photos as its façade, to turn the outside as indoors. And the other way around. Hreinn Fridfinnsson honoured this idea of erecting such a house again in the middle of nowhere in the high lands of Iceland in 1974.
