Louise Bourgeois made sculptures in wood, steel, stone and cast rubber and used drawing and printing as a tool of artistic expression, often organic in form and sexually explicit, emotionally aggressive yet witty, covered many stylistic bases. But from first to last they shared a set of repeated themes centered on the human body and its need for nurture and protection in a frightening world;  protection often translated into images of shelter or home.

The glasswork ‘Touch’ (2009) of Hreinn Fridfinnsson could be characterized as a breakable object that has been touched by the artist’s paint hand in the colours blue, green, yellow, violet and red. It reads as a symbolic act of all the touches done by billions of individuals, a universal human urge that will last until eternity. Fundamental colours that refer to white light and to elementary colours emphasise this continuity of human condition to relate to nature, and the way we look at it and how behave in that same nature being part of it. During millennia many touches have been made and in that sense during the ages to come with touch after touch nothing will change this human drive. KvG

‘Let us meet inside you’ (2006-2009) is a work which Navid Nuur redeveloped for his solo exhibition “The Value of the Void” at the Fridericianum in Kassel, Germany in 2009. The work originally consisted of a water dispenser, where a notebook was attached to a water tank by a belt of the artist. In the notebook the words ‘let us meet inside you’ were written. While looking through the water tank the words could be espied by the viewer. In Kassel this re-staged work consisted of a wall of crates composed of 7000 water bottles. In this case these were filled with Kassel water coming out of a tap which from Navid Nuur’s studio.

“Contemporary” was a monthly visual arts magazine based in London. Founded by Keith Spencer as a quarterly publication, it re-emerged under the title “Contemporary Art” in 1993. Around 2000 it started to offer special inlays like CDs and stiff cards signed in print and hand numbered mostly in an edition of 2000-5000. In spite of its high edition this rubber skull balloon edition is extremely difficult to find.

Handling advice
Balloons made of latex basically deteriorate in time, think of Piero Manzoni’s balloons and the condition they are in now. When exposed to open air the latex shrinks and petrifies; the chemical compositions added during the process of making change, apparently. Therefore this item has been locked in its original seal bag with as less as possible oxygen enabling the tiny balloon to stay flexible, even after one and a half decades. This is done without squeezing the balloon itself. As a result, one smells the strong latex odeur when opening the little bag. It is recommended to handle the balloon with gloves to keep it away from skin moisture that contains fat and salt. KvG
