This is a series of unique ‘Drop cloths’ John Armleder has made on cotton. While preparing his solo exhibition in the Centraal Museum Utrecht in 1992 creating a large three panel ‘Pour Painting’ of 3 x 6 meters. After having finished the huge painting the poured over piece of cotton was one big left-over, which was eventually cut into 105 pieces, still wet and very smelly. The 106th piece appeared to be a real left-over as it is shaped in the form of a very long stretched out triangle. The artist folded this one zigzagging into the last pizza box. The code ‘U 40′ refers to the forty paintings he showed in the museum. On the pizza box is a large red sticker ‘U 40 Drop Cloth’ with artist’ name and date. All are signed on the inside of the box. Some of the works are signed on the cloth itself as well as on the box. The edition has not been numbered.

Note: in 1993 the Wiener Secession in Vienna produced a second drop cloth edition, smaller in size and on coloured fabric with a label on the inside of each pizza box.

In the nineties John Armleder told me the following. One day he, Olivier Mosset and Sylvie Fleury passed a shopping window in which three cuddly toy monkeys were put on display. They looked at each other and at themselves and Sylvie took a picture. Three monkeys forming the AMF clan under which name they regularly had exhibitions together. Not much later this screen print was made.

AMF is a word play of the artists surnames and a company named AMF / American Machine and Foundry that merged in 1969 with Harley Davidson Company. Its logo AMF refers also to one of the AMF artists Olivier Mosset, an enthousiastic Harley Davidson motorcyclist.

JOHN M ARMLEDER, Untitled [flag], 1988

untitled, 1988
200 x 300 cm
polyester flag
edition of 10

Published by Gran Pavese, The Hague (?), Netherlands

John M Armleder has worked for more than thirty years, starting off in the 1960s as a performance artist in the Fluxus inspired Geneva group Ecart (trans. French for ‘diversion’). Rather than work out of a studio, he travels, using galleries as studio spaces, working up shows in response to particular spaces, opportunities, possibilities. Here a flag of dots was made for a flag project in The Netherlands in 1988.

JOHN M ARMLEDER, Cercle et Carré, 1987

‘Cercle et Carré’, 1987
196 x 30 x 39 cm lamp, metal grid, (original) wooden base
edition 18
signed, numbered, dated, certificate
published by Galerie Anselm Dreher, Berlin, Germany
€ 7.500,-

John M Armleder once said (in the eighties) that the work he makes is similar to making B-movies. Here one could conclude that ‘Circle et Carré’ looks very much like the work of a designer. Indeed the lamp is truely a design, but the image with metal grid on the wall is not and just a remarkable addition of the artist.
