The glasswork ‘Touch’ (2009) of Hreinn Fridfinnsson could be characterized as a breakable object that has been touched by the artist’s paint hand in the colours blue, green, yellow, violet and red. It reads as a symbolic act of all the touches done by billions of individuals, a universal human urge that will last until eternity. Fundamental colours that refer to white light and to elementary colours emphasise this continuity of human condition to relate to nature, and the way we look at it and how behave in that same nature being part of it. During millennia many touches have been made and in that sense during the ages to come with touch after touch nothing will change this human drive. KvG

‘Fragment of Remembrance’ refers to memories of his youth and is partly made of a rolled up iron sheep fence used in the countryside of Iceland to keep sheep together close to the farm, when they are not taken to the mountains for grazing. Born in 1943 in Baer Dölum, Iceland, Hreinn Fridfinnsson employs media that are remarkably varied in scale and substance, from photography, drawings and tracings to presentations and installations of sound, texts and ready-mades. As in this edition Fridfinnnsson often presents found objects with which he interferes as little as possible, creating new works that investigate ideas of the self and of time. He has said that: ‘Notions of time are always compelling. The feeling and the interest in the essence of time is serious, but my dealing with time is not knowledge-based; it is more exploratory and feeling-based.’

Hreinn Fridfinnsson preferred to avoid to draw attention to his exhibitions. Yet is was important to get some friends and colleagues to his opening. Instead of having a printed invitation card for his solo show in In-Out Center he handed out a completely handwritten invite with name. It could quite well be that this card is the only one that still exists. As this hand made card represents quite well the attitude of Hreinn Fridfinnsson it ought to be considered a piece in itself, actually.
