MARIJKE VAN WARMERDAM, Another day, 2011

MARIJKE VAN WARMERDAM, Another day, 2011
each 110 x 80 cm
series of 50 unique screen prints, aluminum, framed

With a typically light touch, the work of Marijke van Warmerdam combines a deceptively naïve approach to the act of seeing with straightforward strategies, such as dramatic shifts of scale, doubling, reflection, rhythmic repetition or surprising juxtapositions to urge us to look with our eyes wide open.

In her film loops she depicts perfectly ordinary situations and actions, although factually always staged, with the deliberate use of compositional elements that create an open and unanticipated perspective. In her sculptures, photographic works and paintings, Van Warmerdam is not afraid of using cinematic and visual methods based on animated strategies. In the course of more than two decades she has made a refreshing contribution to the phenomenon of looking.

In December 2009, the New York City Council voted to require business owners to replace garage-style security gates with ones that allow views into the stores behind them by July 2026. Art Production Fund united 18 artists to make murals on security gate doors of shop in the Bowery. These were on view for two months, after which they were painted over, embodying the upcoming legislated disappearance of the gates across the city of New York.

This edition was published in 5 sizes: 8 x 10 inch, 11 x 124 inch, 16 x 20 inch, 24 x 30 inch and 30 x 40 inch.

On the September 15, 2005, Fred Tomaselli alters a more than disturbing front page image of bomb victims in Baghdad, drawing over a photograph with a colorful flower pattern. The swirling vines, reminiscent of traditional Islamic arabesques, distract from the horror of the subject, a suicide bombing that killed nearly 150 people in Iraq.

In New York based mixed-media artist makes works exploring themes of fantasy and desire. Many of his pieces invite the viewer into a meditative state like the blurred, brightly colored, concentric rings of his target-shaped paintings; or his strictly black and white landscapes of gnarled trees that seem to bristle with questionable energy. His large rainbow signs are just as enigmatically alluring with their imperative affirmations of “Hell, Yes!” or “Our Magic Hour.” These signs seem to point to some hidden aspect of our reality and history. One sign, “Dog Days Are Over,” proclaims an end to a period of turmoil, but what that period is remains unclear. The signs encapsulate and make palpable an unnamed collective desire, and, in turn, may inspire a new one, e.g. this voyeuristic piece ‘Nothing but the night’.

Originally “Sindbad” is the title of a series of 98 pictures, painted on the back of panes of glass in 30 x 24 cm format, from 2008. In their first exhibition, Richter paired them as diptychs, like 49 double pages.

The concept of this book was already clear at the time of their painting. Richter decided to reproduce all of the pictures in original format, cut over three pages, leaving a bar of two centimetres blank at the binding. This gives the book its form. The seven texts about ‘Sinbad the Sailor’, each set in three columns over double pages, give structure to the extensive, “fairytale” series. The banderole around the book contains an introduction to the journey. Every detail – paper, typography, layout and flow of the book – was decided by the artist. “Sinbad” (in German “Sindbad”) is without doubt a further highlight in Gerhard Richter’s series of artist’s books.

Sindbad is the title of a series of 98 lacquer pictures made in 2008, painted on the back of 12 x 10-inch panes of glass. For their first public exhibition, Richter paired them as 49 diptychs, which resembled 49 book-page spreads, pointing towards the possible ideal incarnation of these works as a large-format artist’s book. Using silkscreen printing, this volume reproduces all 98 of the pictures at their original dimensions. Seven texts, on the theme of Sinbad the Sailor (in German only), are interleaved with these magnificent images, and a bellyband around the book offers a concise introduction to the work.

Richard Wright paints frescoes that transform interior spaces. Using mathematically calculated techniques that go back to Italian Renaissance architects, he maps out abstract patterns that create vertiginous spatial illusions.
The Rijksmuseum has chosen to celebrate its 21st-century renewal by commissioning the artist a permanent work with 47.000 stars.
