OLAF NICOLAI, Kombination I, 2007 24 × 24 cm
collage, various color combinations, edition of unique series unknown
Galerie Hans Mayer, Duesseldorf, Germany
Repetition is an important motif which appears in Olaf Nicolai’s works continuously. He focuses on the repetitiveness of images from our memory and our subconscious. He also makes works with distorted advertising art. Thus, familiar images are put in new situations again and again. Nicolai often integrates scientific findings into his concepts. His fascination with mathematical models, universal algorithms, symbolism, and regular patterns can be seen in many of his works or installations.

This plush toy has a startling characteristic. Like many plush toys, when you squeeze their belly they speak, but here Mike Kelley made this one to speak 20 different phrases you don’t expect to hear from a toy. It says a.o. things like “Hurt me, I don’t mind,” and “Do you really love me?”

Margin Scheme
With this plain yellow wallpaper Olivier Mosset continues his exploration of monochromes, a smooth manufactured plane with no more than one colour and its materiality. Although this wallpaper too is meant to be attached to a wall creating a monochrome colour field, here the roll could be looked at as a monochrome sculpture by Olivier Mosset. As a kind of DIY edition quite a few rolls have been used to create a monochrome wall in yellow by Olivier Mosset. Hence quite uncommon.

Basically Christian Jankowski is collaborative in nature and his works are based on interactions with non-artworld counterparts, including bankers, weight-lifting champions, cleaning companies, porn studios, horror film producers and in this case director/founder Thora Johansen of the Bifrons Foundation in Amsterdam. Often incorporating chance, accident, and spur of the moment decisions lead to the finished artwork, Jankowski never fulfils a brief as expected, identifying contemporary phenomena that interest him and inverting their meaning.
In the case of Überhappy Christian Jankowski asked both director and harpsichordist Thora Johansen to let herself musically involved and to dance in her studio which she co-operatively did. Question is whether this is painful for her or the artist. Or both…..
