For preparing his first solo exhibition in The Netherlands John Armleder asked me to drive him around to all kinds of shops and places. In the Makro – a supermarket for shopkeepers in the outskirts of Amsterdam – he was attracted by beds for pets. Amongst other things one large grey blue dog bed was picked out by him and taken to the gallery. Later on he remembered to have seen a huge pile of smaller brown coloured cat beds. Of these he could make a multiple, he said. The next day thirty cat beds were bought at Dutch building material supermarket Gamma and a GALERIE VAN GELDER EDITION was made.

JCJ Vanderheyden has produced various mirrors, most of the time for the sake of an exhibition in order to play with repetition through mirroring. This one comes with two yellow painted glass laths, i.e. one on the lower side and one on the right side. A method he uses on the edges of his paintings as well. The horizontal and vertical painted laths reappear in the reflection of the mirror.

Kimball Gunnar Holth doesn’t make anything, or it should be that he found something right before it’s finished. This drawing is what his hand found painting on paper. He left it for what it is, but still gave it a title. These works come from the series ‘Tile paintings’.

Lawrence Weiner’s primary medium is language, often in combination with red, yellow, blue coloured signs, or in mere black and white. He is a New York and Amsterdam-based sculptor who prefers to make art that is accessible, open-ended, mutable and transferable. In the ‘Art Meets Science Multiple’ the artist skipped linguistic language completely, making this work an uncommon outspoken pictorial piece within his oeuvre.
The depicted drawing here is a draft for a new envelope as soon as the first run of 1992 is out of stock. Until today this never happened. The image on the brown envelope suggests that the multiple ought to be installed as depicted. In fact at a later stage Lawrence Weiner preferred to have the piece installed as one likes, although he did not want to have that explicitly mentioned as such.

In April 1976 the first boats of refugees fleeing Vietnam sailed to various countries, heralding a series of arrivals over the next few years. Vietnamese-Dutch sculptor and painter Vinh Phúóng (born in 1959 as Nguyen Phuc Vinh Phúóng) born in Djiring, provincie Lam Dong, Vietnam was one of them. In the early nineties he had his first solo exhibition at Galerie van Gelder in Amsterdam. His motifs always have an undertone of pain and apparently urge to seek protection, together with a dark and enigmatic image making. In this context a broken tiny branche of silver suggests an expression of pain and loss, and not so much a light hearted mimicry of nature, as one may think at first sight.

Each newspaper and magazine in this bag contains an article about group exhibition called Fjörvit (trans. Clear white) organised/curated by Sigurdur Gudmundsson at Nýlistasafnið / The Living Art Museum. Participating artists: Dan Wolgers, Carsten Höller, Christene Hohenbüchler and Irene Hohenbüchler. Among the publications also a stapled stack of 11 black and white photo copies is depicting an exhibition about plants and butterflies. For some reason or other the name of that artist is not mentioned.
The backside of the translucent museum bag shows an introductory text in Icelandic by Sigurdur Gudmundsson.
