In March 1995 John M Armleder took part in a group exhibition The-repitition-that-is-a-repitition at Galerie van Gelder. For the first time ‘Olivier’s rejects’ were shown on a single needle; both clumsy and touching left-overs of a series of elemental forms in print of Olivier Mosset. “I was in Olivier’s atelier and I saw some interesting pieces of paper lying against a paper basket, obviously meant for throwing it away. I asked if I could get these left-overs of his print and cutting out session. That was no problem, but later on he discovered that I re-used his waste. He was a bit jealous when he saw the results, I think…… Well, anyway you should not tell him this.”
Many years later I read a text by Willy Parker in a newsletter (posted 13 March 2009) of Minus Plus, New York, USA, with a quote of John M Armleder: “I believe the work that is considered to be mine is someone else’s…anybody’s… the whole world. My work is a cultural event, an inevitable event. If all artists were to disappear, art would be produced by others with a different understanding, different means and different materials. As an individual, an artist simply fills a void. He is the means to an end, so that this arrangement, this accumulation of events can be organized.” Further in the article Parker gives a version on ‘Olivier’s rejects’ and states: ‘… and in 1994, unless we are mistaken, Olivier Mosset gave John Armleder a number of aquatints he considered to be inadequate (thinking that Armleder would doubtlessly use these for packaging materials or something of this nature), and then Armleder published them under the title Olivier’s Rejects. I don’t think it was a matter on inadequacy, but much more about the playful eye and mind of John…… and the ‘why not’ attitude of Olivier. KvG

“There is a tree native to Australia that grows next to my house in Los Angeles. The Latin name is Syzygium Australe. It has these red/purple berries that are like small cherries. When they fall to the ground they stain the cement purple. I’ve always loved it when plants colored the monotonous infrastructures of a city. So I collected the fruit and made my own stains onto watercolor paper.”

The multiple Intuition has been produced in an unlimited edition, but always signed and dated by the artist. There are several versions circulating; boxes with round corners, hooky corners, nailed, stapled, and at various spots signed and dated on the back, sometimes also ink stamped. Usually the boxes are aged, this one is exceptionally looking new with its whitish appearance.
The multiple Intuition takes the form of a shallow, open box, assembled roughly and from inexpensive cuts of timber.
The first and uppermost of the inscriptions in pencil consists of the word Intuition beneath which lie two horizontal lines. Joseph Beuys intended these respective lines as pictorial evocations of reason and intuition. The short standing strokes with which the upper line is bounded, call to mind the determinacy of rational thought. The lower line, by contrast, is open at one end, evoking the more enigmatic paths along which intuition can travel.
Manufactured in an unlimited edition, this multiple was originally sold by mail order for eight Deutsch marks. The low costs and ready availability of the work fulfilled the wish of Beuys and his publisher Wolfgang Feelisch to make art more accessible to the general public.

From 1968 on, some 12,000 copies were made of this A4-sized plain wooden box, which went on sale at a price of 8 German marks. Circulated in the manner of a pamphlet, the slogan ‘Intuition’ records in two pencil strokes Beuys’ counter thesis to materialism and rationalism in the context of 1968 and its political debate. The empty wooden box was supposed to become an item of daily use, with intuition potentially filling it with a new attitude.

Terrorist of Love by Keren Cytter is a digital film published by Daata and Artspace, launched in October 2016 and to be down loaded for free at https://daata.art/art/terrorist-of-love. It is one of the best evocative contemporary short art films and ballads I came across in the past five years. Within hardly four minutes many basic human phenomena are passing by: the yell of Tarzan, the Islamic melodies coming into the pop culture, the collapse of the Twin Towers as symbols of power, the love of two people, the joy of life, happiness and irony, sounds and growth in nature, human and animal behaviourism.
