The text on this card reads: ‘When we were young, my brother and I shared a 1981 Lada Riva. One day we decided to escape our bourgeois Belgian society and drive to Leningrad. But the car broke down and soon after our lives parted. 30 years later I invite my brother to drive from Belgium to St.Petersburg, now in a 1977 Lada Kopeika. Upon arrival we’ll crash the car into a tree in the courtyard of the Winter Palace, together with the illusions of our youth.
Without an ending there is no beginning.’
Francis Alÿs is well-known for a walk called The Green Line through Jerusalem, along the 1948 partition lines, through armed checkpoints, holding a leaking can of paint: ‘Sometimes doing something poetic can become political and sometimes doing something political can become poetic’.

mail d.d. 15 March 2017 from David Horvitz:
Hi Everyone,
Here is info for March’s studio rent edition.
It is tracing paper.
I have traced with pen 35 scratches on a board that my cat has scratched.
It is March, and this month I turn 35.
So this is using cat scratches to count the years!
This is actually part of the process of making another work, which should be done in some months… Where I needed to get a trace of a cat scratch to make a gold foil stamp of it…

This edition was never completed; circa 50 copies were made. Here a used copy with sticker residues is shown.
The prints and paintings (1991-present) with the name Maxi-Color are part of a large group of works in which an industrial product is appropriated by the artist. On the one hand, this group of works can be divided into ‘appropriation art’ and, on the other hand, into a product that is ‘already made’ as Marcel Duchamps put it. An ‘objet trouvé’ as the colour book featured above.

Jonathan Monk says that ‘once something has been done, it can be done again in a different colour’. Here repetition has been applied by doing a hand stamp twice leading to a kind of romantic image making.

CANDICE BREITZ, Thriller, 2005

Remarkable art piece on DVD! ‘Thriller’ of Michael Jackson has been for this project especially re-mixed by the artist with the help of four Michael Jackson copy cats and fans. Fascinating film cuttings of look-a-likes in the rythm of ‘Thriller’ creating a fragmented collage.
“Thriller originated from a close collaboration between Candice Breitz and Alex Fahl. The work is based on Michael Jackson’s 1982 song of the same name and was made with footage from their 2005 video production King. Of the 16 characters in this work, they selected four hardcore Jackson fans for Thriller: a belly dancer, a Jackson lookalike, a tough guy in his twenties and a real man. We see and hear how they dance and sing along to their heart’s content to the biggest hit of all time, were it not for the fact that Fahl eliminated the text and limited himself to the protagonists’ breathing, humming, laughing and shouting between the words. He made a remix using this audio material and the original beat from Thriller, and later added the original, corresponding video footage. Subsequently, the four clips were edited next to each other. This makes it seem as if they are all performing together, whereas in reality that was not the case. Just as in many of her other films, here too Candice Breitz emphasizes the importance of music as comfort and a source of pleasure. Amateurism, admiration, submission, impudence… Her protagonists are as innocent as children.
Erik Kessels from the KesselsKramer advertising and communications agency also uses the music that Alex Fahl based on Jackson’s Thriller. His contribution can be seen as a tribute, almost bordering on nostalgia. Instead of people, Kessels lets every kind of conceivable cassette tape move across the screen. From Sony to Maxell, from Philips to TDK. They jump to the rhythm of the music, and the tape moves with it for the duration of the song. This conceptual rendition of music gives Fahr’s sounds something that is simultaneously soothing and unsettling. In 1982, there were barely any CDs around, and for a certain generation it’s almost youthful nostalgia to see all those familiar cassettes follow each other on screen at such a quick pace. Kessels shows, in a way bordering on desperation, how immensely popular Thriller was and still is (Michael – written in teenage handwriting on one of the tapes, complete with a heart above the ‘i’ – is an especially poignant detail). Michael Jackson never equalled the sale of 45 million copies worldwide again, and both Kessels and Breitz emphasize with their contribution how fused they have become to this song.”

In order to escape the usual logics Marianne Vierø experiments with abstract images and language that create a picture in the head. In this way a discharge takes place and the abstract images are suddenly differently understood. A process that is always fun to see where it may lead to. It is no wonder that Marianne Vierø at an early stage participated in OAOA / The Oceans Academy of Arts, a magazine for playing with ideas of experimental systems of looking and reading. The pseudo institution presents itself as real and plays with its own illusive image as a stage for the artists reflections. The magazine aims to de-condition and un-learn in relation to the critique of reason and common logics. No-sense, fragmentation, de-funtion and a-chronology is what is looked for.

The House Project (1974-2007) is originally a sculpture installed in the open air by Hreinn Fridfinnsson. Once he read about an aristocratic character in an Icelandic novel who decided to build his house inside-out, with wallpaper, curtains and framed photos as its façade, to turn the outside as indoors. And the other way around. Hreinn Fridfinnsson honoured this idea of erecting such a house again in the middle of nowhere in the high lands of Iceland in 1974.
